reduction

click here for video (quicktime 6.3mb)

on the longest day of 2005 my friend alistair ruff walked through london from sunrise to sunset taking a photograph every minute.
They are presented as a film, but you can pause the video to look at them as individual images, i enjoy the fact these different viewing modes exist.

not working? maybe you don't have quicktime..go to the archive for flash versions, not all of them are there yet though!

And the music not bad too :)

A reduction, and yet, also the opposite of reduction. I enjoy every one of your ideas. We're lucky to have you, keep it up!

i love when he pauses for a few minutes in one place, which he does surprisingly few times. must have been exhausting.

I wonder if, without knowing it was London, native-Londoners could tell their home city from that video. I've always been surprised how quickly I can spot Philadelphia's locale in images from the most seemingly non-revealing photos.

well.. one person i showed it to recognised some of the streets (also where they grew up), although they'd already been told it was london.. i think those places we live in early in our lives embed really strongly into our image memories. i think we also find it easy to recognise the signs of our own culture as well.. did you see the how long the royal mail van hung around in the film, not exactly rushing was it.. definitely england.

always good ideas, maybe I just said that but your works are everytime a surprise because you are able to mix every image in such different way

Love the concept! Funny, I went to London once and that's exactly how my visit went.
